FAQ

How do I keep my cutting board in good condition?

Wood cutting boards are superior to plastic cutting boards in almost every way, however there is some very basic maintenance that will keep your board in good condition for many years. Hand wash only. After every use, it is recommended to coat your board with Schroeder Woodworks Board Butter. This helps to condition the board while also giving a protective coat of food-safe wax. It is also recommended that as needed, to put some cutting board oil on the board and let it soak overnight and wipe away the excess. This will season the board and to finish the process, wipe some of the board butter on your board.

How long will it take for me to get my board?

That depends on a few things. A lot of what we make is custom orders so often times we are making our products from scratch. Many of the items that have made it onto the website are items that we found lots of people really liked and wanted. Sometimes we have several of those in stock and can get it out in a day or so, but it will take several days if the boards are being built from scratch. You can usually expect it within a week, but up to two weeks at most, unless otherwise noted. If you need it by a certain day, call or email us first and we will let you know if we can accommodate a quicker turnaround.

Can I put a wood board in the dishwasher?

NO! This is one sure way to ruin a gorgeous board- or anything wood for that matter. Wood has antibacterial properties, so as long as you clean the board, there is no need to "disinfect" the board with a cycle in the dishwasher. Hand wash with warm, soapy water and do not soak your boards. Wipe excess water off, let it dry, and coat with Schroeder Woodworks Board Butter before putting it back in a drawer or cabinet.

Why are wood cutting boards better?

How much time do you have? 1) They have microbial properties that keep the food safe, where the plastics are a petri dish for growing bacteria. 2) The wood boards, especially an end grain board, help to keep your knives sharper for longer as they are less likely to dull your blades, making your cuts better, the honed edge last longer, and ultimately safer with each cut. 3) When you cut into a plastic cutting board, you are also cutting microscopic bits of plastic into your knives and into the food that you eat. It is estimated that people who use plastic cutting boards are ingesting approximately 50g of microplastics a year which is the equivalent of eating two AA batteries worth of plastic- and that is just from the plastic cutting boards! 4) They are just so much more beautiful!

Do you ship? Can we do a local pick up?

Yes! If you're unsure if we ship to you, shoot us an email at schroederwoodworksco@gmail.com and we can give you more specifics. Also email us if you're in the Chicago area and would like to work out a local pick up to avoid shipping fees.

Do you accept cash, check, Venmo or Zelle?

Yes and no. This is mostly done for custom orders or local pickups. If you are wanting to pay with cash or check, we either require payment upfront, $50 deposit, or 50% down payment (depending on the cost of the product). This is so that materials can be purchased. The deposit is non-refundable.

Do you personalize or take custom orders?

Yes! Depending on the detail and what you're looking for. We do router engravings, not laser engravings. Names and basic graphics are perfect. We also offer the option of adding epoxy resin if you really want to make your board one-of-a-kind!

Do you stain the woods in your cutting boards?

Absolutely not. All of the boards are made with natural wood products and are seasoned with 100% food safe products to keep the boards in looking good and healthy. The cutting board oil we use brings out the natural colors of the woods- yes even the red (paduak), purple heart, and yellow heart woods.
